“One day, a long time ago and in a faraway place, or so the legend goes, there was a huge forest fire that was raging in the countryside. All the animals were terrified, running around in circles, screaming, crying and helplessly watching the impending disaster. But there in the middle of the flames, and above the cowering animals, was a tiny hummingbird busy flying from a small pond to the fire, each time fetching a few drops with its beak to throw on the flames. And then again. And then again. After a while, an old grouchy armadillo, annoyed by this ridiculous useless agitation on the part of the hummingbird, cried out “Tiny bird! Don’t be a fool. It is not with those minuscule drops of water one after the other that you are going to put out the fire and save us all !”
To which the hummingbird replied, "Could be, but I’m going to do my bit."

About us
In the midst of 130 hectares of protected Amazonian forest, the Puerto Morona Sanctuary, a peaceful shelter harboring in harmony hundreds of amazing, exceptional, even unusual animal species of Equator, can be found.
Our goal is to protect and preserve endangered species by ensuring their reproduction and reintroduction into the ideal environment, best suited for their well being.
This goes hand in hand with our other objective, which is to raise public awareness on the importance of each and every single living being in the ecosystem, using the sanctuary to spread knowledge and create unforgettable, unique memories in the middle of the Ecuadorian jungle.
Meet our residents
In order to meet the needs of some animals , victims of poaching or illegal detention whose physical or behavioral sequelae make their return to the wild difficult if not impossible, we have especially arranged some suitable areas.
They are meant to serve as a way to nurse and protect them, and even, if possible, to help set them free.
The following five protected areas provide settings that are the closest to natural habitat while guaranteeing the animal's well being, to ensure its safe development.
Each animal will receive the food and medical care adapted to its needs.
